Know Hope's Vicariously Speaking project

2 August 2016

At the beginning of 2016, Know Hope (the pseudonym of artist Addam Yekutieli) began writing to prisoners on death row in a Nashville penitentiary. After receiving replies from the inmates, the artist selected specific phrases from the letters and presented them to the public on a series of large billboards all over the city.

Removing these phrases from their original context and placing them alone in a new environment, a newfound presence for the prisoners has been achieved in public spaces, creating a complex dialogue between two separate realities.

The ongoing project will continue with a number of further interventions and manifestions, one of which will see the inmates' phrases being tattooed onto members of the public at large. This will not only create an intimate bond between the prisoners and the tattooed individuals, but will also allow the tattooed hosts to become the inmates' messengers on "the outside".
