London Views

Presents "London Views", the first solo exhibition by Stanley Donwood.

From 19th May 2006 for about a month, 11am – 7pm. All work is for sale.

Lazarides Galley, 8 Greek Street, Soho, London, W1D 4DG

Artist and designer Stanley Donwood has gained worldwide recognition for his work on the album and poster art for Radiohead. He has collaborated with the band since 1994, when he designed the artwork for their second album "The Bends".

The exhibition shows thirteen original panels. Each panel depicts an apocalyptic vision of modern day London, viewed in panorama from the Thames and showing iconic structures including Big Ben, Canary Wharf and the dome of St. Paul's.

Donwood has drawn some of his inspiration for "London Views" from the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle. One of the earliest printed books, The Chronicle – by Hartmann Schedel – was a primitive world history, accompanied by 1,804 lavish woodcuts. Donwood has transported the style of these illustrations into a modern setting, adding a Medievalised atmosphere to his vision of apocalypse in England's capital.

Kelsey Brookes

I like to meet people, especially people who can help me sell art. To help facilitate a relationship with these type of folks I create zines and drop them in locations I think artsy kids/curators might pick them up. Hence the reason FreddiC and Derek from the Lab101 in Culver City (LA) found a new copy of my zine in their mail slot ... 2 weeks later they invited me on a last minute mission to Vancouver to show and paint live at the 2nd annual Brave Art exhibition in Whistler BC (that's Canada for all you geographically challenged).

Since 1999, Lucy Mclauchlan and Matt Watkins have operated as artists, illustrators and designers under the umbrella title of Beat13. Embracing a hand crafted DIY ethos and an open attitude towards collaboration, they have carved a unique style and stance. Organizing exhibits, events, their gallery, website, collective projects and their own personal work under the Beat13 banner, the hard working duo's intense freeform doodles have attracted international intrigue and acclaim whilst providing a source of inspiration for their local peers, such as Glenn Anderson and Rich Coldicott who will join Lucy and Matt at Lab101.

The four artists were raised in Birmingham, the UK's second largest city and back bone of the industrial revolution. Despite the city's postwar rebuild creating a "concrete jungle", the city is actually one of Europe's greenest and a melting pot of ethnic diversity which has undergone large-scale redevelopment in recent years. This backdrop of questionably evolving inner-city life is an underlying theme for the artists' layered barrage of characters and scenery.

Lucy Mclauchlan

"Lucy draws like an angry sparrow stuck up a tree" Banksy, 2005. Lucy Mclauchlan is a freelance artist based in London and Birmingham, UK. Her work has been exhibited internationally throughout Europe, Japan and Australia with shows in both established art galleries and underground venues. Armed with a marker pen or paintbrush Lucy spontaneously covers almost any surface with her unique mark making style, creating intricate fantasy worlds that blend details from everyday life with images from her own imagination. These personal explorations are always character driven and familiar figures and motifs re-occurr across individual works. The drawings evolve from her unconscious mind and are rendered on surfaces as far ranging as canvas, paper, cars and walls. Recently Lucy has painted live on site specific projects for numerous galleries including; the V Museum (London), Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the NOW Arts Festival (UK) and in Japan at the Hankyu Dept Store. Coverage of such events and interviews with her have appeared in many magazines and publications such as; Hidden Tracks (DGV), Graphic International (Magma), Hand to Eye (Pentegram), Graphic Britain (Laurence King), DPM (Maharishi), IdN magazine, Creative Review, Modart, Relax and Plus81. Current commissions and collaborations have included; Pictures on Walls (home to Mode2, Banksy etc), Eclectic Gallery (London/Tokyo), Keep a Breast Foundation and the animated pop band Gorillaz.

Matt Watkins

Inspired by novelty, catastrophe, cosmology and technology, Matt's skills adapt fluently between design, illustration, animation, photography, and music. Intrigued by the emerging popularity of the Internet, Matt setup the Beat13 website in 1999 with the simple intention of triggering the imaginations of his friends and acquaintances and encouraging collective art initiatives. Whilst living and working in London, the website attracted the attention of Jamie Hewlett and Matt became a founder member of Zombie Flesh Eaters, Jamie's team responsible for the visual side of the Gorillaz project. Between Beat13 projects, Matt continues to work at Zombie. In 2003, Matt spawned the Beat13 Gallery in his hometown of Birmingham to make available prints and original work from artists he and Lucy admire.
