Prefab77 - Untied Kingdom

Featuring Prefab77
21st May 2010 - 31st July 2010
Prefab77 are a collective of artists based in the North East of England. From an area steeped in a volatile history of unions, struggles and movements they create fast, hard-edged, stripped down artwork; often political, sometimes anti-establishment, always beautiful. They weave small bites of modern popular culture, vintage NME headlines, pure British rock 'n' rebellion into traditional iconic British imagery.

'Untied Kingdom' tells a story of modern Britain on the take, told through a new collection of works on canvas, metal, wood and exclusive prints.

halfway to hell, to makeover cage

Featuring antonio trecel diaz
1st April 2010 - 8th May 2010
Throughout April, Lazarides Newcastle basement will play host to a combination of old and new works from Brooklyn based Antonio Trecel Diaz. His drawings depict images of death, violence and dismemberment, and Diaz creates symbolic systems that screen the traumatic, renderings of figures slipping beyond recognition. In Diaz’s economy the body is always a body in distress, torn apart by malfunctioning tools, impossible longings, charts and representations. Drawing becomes the expression of loss, lack and failure that doubles itself through the malformed subject matter: humans and animals in states of ambiguity, amputated and dissected; forms manipulated by external forces: severed bodies, incomplete lines and marks that all end in the creation of something other. Drawing as desire, as a form of archaic magic where there are no ideals, figures or objects, only moments of immanent assemblages pieced together, pushing themselves towards the horizon of the visible. The content of Diaz’s work exist somewhere between its subject and the marking, the mark being foundational and the subject being secondary in that it is an armature which is quickly effaced and only surfaces as effacement. Disappearance takes on the quality of a residual build up on the surface of the paper, which always points towards the limits of representation, the limits of perception. This is the trace that is so essential to drawing: the shadow cast by communication.

Zevs - Lux

Featuring Zevs
20th November 2009 - 30th January 2010
Bursting with creative and seditious energy after his recent spell in a Chinese jail, Lazarides Newcastle is delighted (and somewhat relieved) to welcome ZEVS for a solo exhibition featuring a sensational new body of work. Entitled LUX, the show, as its title suggests, will focus both on his appropriation of 'luxury' brand logos and his remarkable nocturnal public interventions with light, shadow and reflection in his home town of Paris, also known as ‘The City of Lights’. ZEVS will be spending a few days in Newcastle ahead of the opening, working both in and around the gallery, and we'll be spending our time either talking him out of liquidating Greggs' logo, or visiting him in our local prison.

The show runs 20th November- 30th January and is open Tuesday-Saturday 12 noon-6pm.

For more information please read the press release.

Mode 2 - Reality, Fantasy, And The Web

Featuring Mode 2
21st August 2009 - 10th October 2009
We are proud to announce the first solo exhibition by Mode 2 at Lazarides Newcastle.

Widely considered to be one of the most influential street artists ever, Mode 2 continues to push eroticism in his gallery work, often quite explicitly, while trying to keep men and women engaged in an egalitarian dialogue about sexuality.

Besides new paintings, a selection of Mode's sketches will be on display in the ground floor of the gallery, something of a first for Mode, as he's never before allowed us to look behind his more public painting work.

For more information read the press release.

Cult

Featuring Angel 41
26th June 2009 - 1st August 2009

Manchester based Angel 41 makes his debut in Lazarides Newcastle basement with a series of mixed media paintings: urban scriptures, annotations and prophecies reflected through a deranged mirror, trapped under layers of paint. Working predominately with acrylic and emulsion, Angel 41 also uses mixed media in his work, sourcing and tearing snippets of throw away culture. At first glance, these relics of our time appear deeply sinister, but look closer and you will discover glimpses of pure emotion, dark humour and irony. Textured layers merge with flashes of typography and imagery, forming strange hybrids which reflect the modern urban landscapes that surround our lives.

May '68 - Paris: Posters from the Student Riots

Featuring Posters from the May 1968 Student Riots
5th September 2008 - 1st November 2008
Lazarides Gallery Newcastle is proudly exhibiting a collection of over 50 surviving and original pieces of work from the era-defining 1968 Parisian student riots. Anonymously produced as political propaganda, these posters were created during a time of high unemployment and poverty across France that climaxed in violent clashes on the streets of Paris. They represent the art of a revolution, as relevant today as ever before.

Press Release

In the cellar space we shall be exhibiting a selection of work by our represented artists in a group show opening at the same time.
