David Choe

Biography

Rarely do we see a street artist with the skills and complexity of David Choe. Rapidly establishing himself as one of the greats of the genre, Choe is compellingly repulsive. His complex and pulchritudinous pictures, seductive, appealing and ambitious yet equally mischievous, brutal and insular demonstrate what an angry, intelligent talent can truly achieve.

Choe sculpts and paints in oils, acrylics, crayon and mixed media. His credibility as an ‘artist’, albeit one inclined to utilise public spaces every so often, is hardly in doubt. Influences flow through comic book culture to gothic art, impressionism and the surreal. The content of Choe’s work is equally complex and in contrast to the slick, succinct, populist messages of some of his contemporaries. The fictional military heroes of GI Joe wield boomboxes above Arabic slogans; hip young metropolitan ladies whisper their cruel conspiracies; seedy delights beckon from behind pretty vistas; grown men scream for ice cream; absurdist animals rope humans into their incomprehensible schemes. On the street, base titillating yet supposedly ‘tasteful’ advertising becomes doctored with intestines and tribal fetishes, echoing the sensual abyss of de Sade. Pictures titles include I Fuck Nerds. Equally, Choe’s figurative and collage work displays sensitivity and intricacy rarely matched by Manhattan’s girly fashion illustrator set. We should be grateful, not offended, by the insights into Choe’s potent imagination and agenda; and the alluring, intricate slag smelted from its process of reconciliation.

The Outsiders Private View

30th May 2008
Fanatics, loose cannons, crazed beings, lunatics ... yes “The Outsiders” show is now open and running. They came; they saw; they drank; they danced like there was no tomorrow. The art on the other hand was amazing, an all you can eat feast for the eyes, and with most of the artists there, the chance to corner your favorite hero with drunken chat about how long you've been in love with them was all too much for some...hence the obscene levels of alcohol consumption, and shape shifting / dancing.

Thanks to all that came, Tiger for the beer and Oval for the Vodka and Mr jazz dance ... if there's a better reason for staying fully clothed in an art gallery I haven't seen one.

Last chance to view David Choe- Murderous Heart

22nd April 2008
We are now in the last week of David Choe's exhibition “Murderous Heart”. If you haven't viewed the show yet and would like to, then you have until Thursday 24th April to drop by. We will be closed from Friday 25th until Friday 2nd May.

David Choe Private View

4th March 2008
On Thursday we were pleased to open David Choe's London show here at Laz.

David's S & M watercolours, contrasted beautifully with his candy floss/ cyanide spray can and oil paintings. Multiple mediums is Choes game and this heady mix of everything and anything, goes some way to embelish the hellish beauty of his work.

Murderous Hearts could have been called several things; The suicide manual, Hell is in your head, or Friday morning hangovers are the worst!

Thanks every one that came, Tiger and for the peculiar dancing that followed at the after party.

Not much about Davids world is normal....

David Choe at work

3rd March 2008
We thought it was about time to treat you to some pictures of the man at work on his massive installations here in the Newcastle space. First up is the making of the huge gun. Of course there's always time for a drumming break, well before they got painted anyway. Next is Choe painting the jumping figures, the large city girl head and of course the naked ladies. If you would like to register an interest in any of the installation boards then please contact us.
